LMHO: Laughing My Head Off – Kerwin Electric

Jim Kerwin founded Kerwin Electric in 1975, initially operating out of his barn in Schoolcraft, Michigan. With his extensive knowledge of agricultural power, he quickly became a preferred contractor among the local farmers. This work led to various residential and small commercial contracts; his business quickly grew to about ten employees, and the business nearly doubled in size over the next decade. In 2000, Jim’s sons, Chad & Jake, began the process of taking over the business. With the additional management personnel in place, Kerwin Electric was able to diversify its services to include everything from automatic standby generators to wind/solar solutions. Jim still takes part in running the business and continues working in the field today; he makes sure that the company maintains its core principles of providing quality service at a fair price.

BOL- Burst Out Loud – Hungry Howies

The Hungry Howie’s story began in 1973 when Jim Hearn converted a 1,000 square foot hamburger shop in Taylor, Michigan into a successful carry-out and delivery pizzeria. How does a single-store operation become a successful multi-unit competitor in the pizza industry? Steve Jackson says, “It takes a fierce desire to succeed in one of the toughest food segments. Major elements in our strategy include excellent products, superior customer service and the marketing savvy to compete against the national pizza chains.” At Hungry Howie’s, we have combined the right ingredients and years of successful experience to create a superb, growth-oriented business operation. Our delicious, high-quality Flavored Crust™ pizzas, calzone-style subs, and salads uniquely position Hungry Howie’s in the pizza marketplace, allowing us to fully capitalize on the fastest growing segment of the food service industry. C&G: Chuckle and Grin – The Cheese Lady

Prior to opening the doors on our Texas Township location in Kalamazoo, I sold a variety of cheeses at various farmer’s markets in the Kalamazoo area. Utilizing a great resource in the area, The Can Do Kitchen, for budding food entrepreneurs, I was able to prep the cheeses for market every week. After many successful weekends at Vicksburg, Texas Township, and Bronson Hospital markets, I determined a storefront would soon be in the works. Using Kathleen (the Original Cheese Lady) as my mentor, I quickly began learning more and more about the world of cheese and developing my passion. I opened on March 17, 2011. With such a great response from customers, I immediately acquired the help of my father, Terry, to help me in the store. His knowledge and passion for cheese is quite expansive as well, and we have been thrilled to share this with our customers. We hope to see you soon!

In Kind – Dumela Project

Dumela Project is committed to spreading the joy of entertainment and inspiration through recorded and live music. Formed in Kalamzoo, Michigan in 2012, the 5 member group is hard at work expanding their catalog and promoting their brand.Dumela Project, meaning, “I affirm you, I believe in you, and I see great potential in you” focuses around the idea of “positive living”. Music is a way to celebrate, express oneself, and to create community with other people, and this is precisely what Dumela Project is promoting. The name was inspired by a Western Michigan University professor that three of the five members had in school. This professor stands by the idea of building community with others through positive communication and respect. The name “Dumela Project” symbolizes this positivity and friendship in all of our members, while maintaining that this is a group effort, made possible through commitment, and the drive to create music. Mike Fish (Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals), Chris Fish (Electric Guitar/Vocals), Miles Fish (Drums), Austin Peters (Saxophone), and Jake Wilkins (Bass Guitar) form the current lineup of the band, but in the short three years as an active band in Kalamazoo, the lineup hasn’t always been the same. Dumela Project started in 2004 with solo acoustic guitarist/singer-songwriter Mike Fish, but was not named at this point. Gradually, instruments were added with drummer Miles Fish and bass guitarist Aaron Beck in 2010. The five piece filled out in the summer of 2013 with the additions of electric guitarist Chris Fish and saxophonist Lasse Grunewald. An additional member, Austin Peters, joined the band in 2014. In the fall of 2014 bass guitarist/background vocalist Aaron Beck withdrew from the band. Jake Wilkins is filling in as the bass guitarist until further notice. Lasse Grunewald is involved with many musical endeavors, and plays with Dumela Project on a show to show basis. The three Fish brothers are Kalamazoo natives, while Jake Wilkins is from the east side of Michigan, and Austin Peters from Northern Michigan. Lasse Grunewald is from Germany. The band’s base material was originally created by Mike Fish during his time as a solo artist in Kalamazoo. When other members began to join, the songs evolved to Mike’s ideas with everybody adding their own personality. Various sections to some tunes may have been altered based on group brainstorming from the band. Up until now, various song ideas have been introduced to the band, and have been expanded upon, but nothing that is recorded yet. Currently, Dumela Project is continuing to produce new material created as a band. The first studio effort from the boys is in the final stages, and very near completion. All 5 tracks are self-produced by the band. It will be available before February 2015. Dumela Project is committed to being inspired and inspiring people through music and entertainment, and taking on any challenge that comes our way. We are in it for the music.

In Kind – Free Love Bakery

Eating gluten-, soy-, and dairy-free is tricky when you’re a foodie at heart. In my former life, food brought so much joy. But with it came pain. Five years ago my body rebelled. I hurt everywhere. Hugs from my kids hurt. I couldn’t drag myself out of bed. My brain was foggy. My body was swollen all the time. The doctors worked me up for bone cancer... multiple sclerosis...lupus...lyme disease...all negative. They finally settled on fibromyalgia... with IBS...with ADHD....and depression. Then came the meds. For the next three years my symptoms got worse, medications increased, and I gradually lost me. I missed my life. I tried gluten-free eating. Three weeks later all my symptoms were gone and meds were kicked to the curb. Thanks to food testing, I sent gluten, soy, and dairy all packing. After all, they weren’t very nice to me! I felt alive again. Sassy even! But I craved many of the foods I left behind. This is how Free Love Bakery blossomed. Everything I bake is food I missed when I began eating gluten-free... soft sandwich buns...chewy sugar cookies...thick pizza crust... chewy bagels. For the love of all that is awesome...REAL FOOD! Free Love Bakery. You’re free to love and share your food with friends and family once again! We're now offering more than just baked goods. Our new storefront boasts Take & Bake meals, allergy friendly salads, bulk baking ingredients, plus a great variety of classes. We're looking forward to pouring you a hot cup of coffee and getting to know you! We'll help you fall in love with food all over again. Stop by and see us in the Portage Plaza, we're in between Colonial Kitchen and Old Anchor. Look for our banner in the window... we'll have a sign coming soon!

In Kind – Nonla

This is how NONLA Vietnamese Street Food in Mattawan came to be: In April 2015 Kelly & Johnny Nguyen packed their two dogs and drove across the country from San Francisco to Kalamazoo. Except for a break at the end of May to have a baby (Olive), they spent every day over the next couple months painting, building, and cooking at 24050 Front Avenue in Mattawan. On July 7th, after lots of work, laughs, and late nights, they opened the doors to NONLA. It had seemed crazy. Why move? Why Mattawan? Why that little brick building? Yet to them it made perfect sense. They had seen the building in January when it was dark, empty, and covered in snow. But the Nguyens saw something else, too. The old post office building, which had housed a succession of businesses, put a twinkle in Johnny’s eye: “That is our restaurant.” With those four words the ball was rolling. Bing-bang-boom, they opened and are taking orders.
